Historical Fragments in Ancient Contexts

Organization: Alte Geschichte, HHU Düsseldorf (PD Dr. Dirk Rohmann)
Venue: Haus der Universität, Düsseldorf
Date: 7th-8th of March 2025

Historical fragments are important in ancient history. The conference sheds new light on both the literary contexts and the cover texts containing fragments from ancient histories which are otherwise lost today. A group of international specialists intends to review the ways in which historical information are handed down in second-hand contexts over the course of antiquity.

Starting with the methodological and general problem of how modern digital editions can further our knowledge of contextualisation of historical fragments, the individual contributions will then continue to investigate the transmission of fragments from Greek histories of the classical and Hellenistic periods, paying special attention to the “bottleneck” of Hellenistic scholarship which is sadly underrepresented in the surviving source material. Equal consideration will be given to Greek historical fragments quoted in the Roman imperial and late antique periods.
