International Workshop: Divination in the Ancient Near East. Indigenous and Borrowed Traditions and their "Sitz im Leben"
Munich, March 5–6, 2025

Workshop in the Framework of the DFG Project “The Hittite Corpus of Divinatory Texts”. Digital Edition and Cultural-Historical Analysis (HDivT), led by Birgit Christiansen (LMU Munich), Enrique Jiménez (LMU Munich) and Daniel Schwemer (University of Würzburg)

The great number of divinatory texts preserved from different regions of the ancient Near East demonstrates the great significance of divination in the respective societies. The texts show that various techniques were practiced, recorded, and passed down from generation to generation. Especially in the so-called peripheral areas, divinatory knowledge from other regions was also adopted, supplementing local traditions. As with the material from Ugarit and Emar, this is particularly evident in the Hittite corpus, where the similarities and differences among the various constituents are apparent.

Our workshop aims to compare and contrast different divinatory traditions and delve into their origins, dissemination, and practice. We will examine the relationships between the written records and the divinatory practices and explore the interplay of their social, political, and religious contexts and functions. By doing so, we will encourage a solid comparative and contrastive discussion of these traditions.
