Sidonius Apollinaris

Your Research Companion

This portal provides access to a wide range of materials supporting the study of Sidonius Apollinaris, a fifth-century Gallo-Roman aristocrat, high official, poet, letter writer, and bishop of Clermont (Auvergne) – a key figure in the transition of the later Roman Empire to the early Middle Ages and the dawn of Europe as we know it. It features an up-to-date bibliography, links to digitized manuscripts, an overview of editions, commentaries and translations, a variety of notes on reception, additions to the 2020 Edinburgh Companion to Sidonius Apollinaris, and more. It is updated on a monthly basis.

In addition, the original Sidonius website, sidonapol.org, comes with the latest news, events and upcoming publications. It originated as a corollary to Joop van Waarden’s 2009 PhD thesis Writing to Survive and developed in conjunction with the Sidonius Apollinaris for the 21st Century (SAxxi) project and the Academic Network on Sidonius Apollinaris of the School of History, Classics and Archaeology of the University of Edinburgh. This network also hosts the ‘Sidonius in Antiquity and Modernity‘ blog.
