Die Tagung verfolgt einen interdisziplinären Ansatz, und wir freuen uns über Beiträge aus verschiedenen Fachgebieten wie der Alten Geschichte, der Klassischen Philologie, der Philosophie, der Religionswissenschaft und der Archäologie, die über anthropozentrische und binäre Deutungsrahmen hinausgehen und untersuchen, wie Gender und Spezies gemeinsam die gelebten, imaginierten und dargestellten Beziehungen zwischen Menschen und anderen Tieren in der Antike prägten. Tagungssprachen sind Deutsch, Englisch, Französisch und Italienisch.
Eine Veröffentlichung der Beiträge in einem Sammelband ist geplant. Forschende aller Qualifikationsstufen sind eingeladen, uns ihre Vortragsidee in einem Abstract zu unterbreiten. Bitte schicken Sie Ihren Vorschlag (max. 300 Wörter) bis am 13. Dezember 2026 an irene.digioia@email.uni-kiel.de.

Reconsidering decline. Transitions and transformations in Arkadia and beyond from the 3rd century BC to the 3rd century AD
International and Interdisciplinary Symposium
Graz, 20–22 May 2027

We invite individual studies as well as integrated approaches from scholars in the fields of archaeology, epigraphy, history, numismatics, and philology, who are working on the history and culture of Arkadia and the Arkadians in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Since Arkadia has never been isolated from the rest of the world, we are also interested in communities and regions that have been in contact with Arkadia and its people during this period.

Registration
If you wish to present a paper or a poster, please complete the attached form including your title and abstract of max. 250 words and send it to arkadien@uni-graz.at. 
The registration deadline for posters and presentations is 30 November 2026.

The allotted speaking time for each paper is 20 minutes, followed by a 5-minute discussion slot. Posters can be discussed with the authors in a separate time slot.
Oral contributions are welcome in English, German, or Greek. Please use English only for any written contributions (abstracts, posters, handouts, text/captions on slides).
Notifications of acceptance will be issued by end of January 2027.
The results of our multi-disciplinary symposium will be published in a conference proceedings
volume.

Beyond the Alphabet: Communicating in Ancient Greece, c. 1200–500 BCE

This conference sets out to explore how people communicated from the end of the Bronze Age until the end of the Archaic period in Greece, moving beyond a logo- and Graeco-centric focus on script alone to consider the full spectrum of visual, material, and literary strategies through which meaning was transmitted. It invites contributions that examine written and non-written (including non-figurative) communication, and that ask how each shaped, competed with, or reinforced the other.

Each session is expected to last 45 minutes, with 30 minutes allotted to each paper, followed by 15 minutes of discussion. Papers in both English and German will be considered. To submit an abstract, please email the organisers Julia Kretschmer and Elisa Scholz at CIAGconference27@gmail.com with the following: your name, email address, affiliation, paper title, abstract (250-300 words), and a brief scholarly biography. The deadline to submit an abstract is 11.12.2026.

The colloqium will be dedicated to the study of “Inscribed Christian Culture(s) (4th – early 6th centuries)”. The contributions should focus on the inscribed space of churches (walls, floors, inscribed larger and smaller objects and monuments in churches like altars, baptisteries), including inscriptions outside, over or / next to the entrance of churches.

We aim to explore to what extent the selection of epigraphic texts reflected the intellectual, societal, communal, theological, religious mindset(s) of the time, the region, the individual bishop etc., and how these practices may have contributed to the choice of words as well to the choice where and how these texts were inscribed.

We are particularly interested in the spatial relationships (which, in terms of agency, can take on a life of their own), the individuals and groups involved, and the textual strategies underlying the inscriptions.

Papers can be presented in English, French, Italian, Spanish or German.

We will be able to provide some financial support to early-career researchers. This support could include coverage of travel and accommodation expenses, subject to availability of funds and specific eligibility criteria. Further details regarding the application process and selection criteria will be made available in due course. 

Proposals (250–500 words), along with a short bio, should be sent to horster@uni-mainz.de by 18 October 2026.
Accepted authors will be notified by 15 November 2026.

Namen (z.B. Theonyme, Heroennamen und Toponyme) sind ein zentraler Bestandteil des Mythos. Im Rahmen der Konferenz soll die Funktion von Eigennamen in mythologischen Erzählungen und verwandten Textgattungen kultur- und epochenübergreifend aus einer vergleichenden Perspektive untersucht werden.

Bei Interesse bitten wir um die Zusendung eines Arbeitstitels und eines Abstracts von etwa 300 Wörtern bis zum 15. November 2026 an: florian.sommer@iaka.uzh.ch und athanassios.vergados@ncl.ac.uk.

Die geplante Konferenz setzt hier an und untersucht den Umgang mit Hochwasser und Überschwemmungen in vormodernen Gesellschaften. Im Zentrum stehen das Verhältnis von Vulnerabilität und Resilienz gegenüber wiederkehrenden Umweltgefahren sowie die Frage nach der Kritikalität von Infrastrukturen. Ein besonderes Augenmerk liegt auf den Auswirkungen von Überschwemmungen auf die gebaute Umwelt, auf Maßnahmen zu deren Schutz und Instandhaltung sowie auf den Akteuren und Institutionen, die für Vorsorge, Krisenmanagement und Wiederaufbau verantwortlich waren.

Die Tagung versteht Überschwemmungen als einen Gegenstand, der sich besonders fruchtbar aus der Verbindung unterschiedlicher disziplinärer Zugänge untersuchen lässt. Eingeladen sind daher Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler aus den Geistes-, Sozial- und Naturwissenschaften. Angesprochen sind unter anderem die Geschichtswissenschaft, Archäologie, Geographie, Hydrologie, Klimatologie, Literaturwissenschaft, Religionswissenschaft, Kunstgeschichte, Sozial- und Politikwissenschaften, historische Bauforschung sowie Wissenschafts- und Technikphilosophie.

Besonders willkommen sind Beiträge, die über die Grenzen einzelner Disziplinen hinausweisen. Ziel der Tagung ist es, einen intensiven Dialog zwischen unterschiedlichen Fächern und Karrierestufen anzuregen und neue Perspektiven auf vormoderne Umwelt- und Krisendynamiken zu entwickeln. Die Konferenz soll nicht nur bestehende Forschungen zusammenführen, sondern auch Anknüpfungspunkte für längerfristige interdisziplinäre Kooperationen eröffnen.

Die Tagungssprache ist Deutsch; englischsprachige Beiträge sind ebenfalls möglich. Die Vorträge sollten eine Länge von 20 Minuten nicht überschreiten. Bitte reichen Sie bei Interesse ein halbseitiges Abstract sowie einen kurzen wissenschaftlichen Lebenslauf ein und senden Sie Ihre Bewerbung bis zum 30. November 2026 an alicia.wolff@zegk.uni-heidelberg.de. Reise- und Übernachtungskosten der Referentinnen und Referenten werden übernommen. Eine Publikation der Konferenzergebnisse ist vorgesehen, voraussichtlich in der Reihe „Akademiekonferenzen“ des Winter Verlags.

Sailing through Words. Maritime Technical Terminology from Antiquity to the Middle Ages

Our workshop seeks to compare the specialised languages of seafaring, shipbuilding, naval administration, warfare, and commerce across periods and regions, from the Aegean Bronze Age to the medieval Baltic and beyond. We aim to ask which processes govern the formation and transmission of these languages, and what role they played for the communities that developed them, offering, in doing so, the first systematic, comparative typology of maritime technical languages, and bringing papyrology, epigraphy, linguistics, philology, and the history of technology into a dialogue that has so far remained fragmented across disciplinary and period-specific boundaries.

Das sechste Kolloquium der Reihe „Bildwerdung der Antike“ widmet sich den vielfältigen Formen der Wahrnehmung, Tradierung und Interpretation antiker Magica in der Frühen Neuzeit. Ausgangspunkt bilden materielle wie mediale Zeugnisse, d.h. Artefakte und ihre bildlichen Wiedergaben in Zeichnung und Druckgraphik, die im Kontext frühneuzeitlicher Wissens- und Interpretationszusammenhänge hinsichtlich ihrer religiösen, kultischen, apotropäischen, astrologisch-kosmologischen, alchimistischen, medizinischen, rituellen, mythologischen und symbolischen Dimensionen untersucht werden. 

Ziel der Tagung ist es, die Mechanismen der wissenschaftlichen Aneignung und der visuellen Vermittlung antiker Magica im europäischen Kontext des 16. bis 18. Jahrhunderts grundlegend zu konturieren.

Erbeten sind Vorschläge für Beiträge in Deutsch, Englisch, Französisch oder Italienisch von 20 Minuten Länge, die idealerweise Fallstudie und größere Perspektive verbinden. 

Vorschläge (max. 400 Wörter) können bis zum 31. Oktober 2026 zusammen mit einem kurzen Lebenslauf (max. 150 Wörter) mit dem Stichwort „Episteme VI“ an thesaurus(at)bbaw.de eingereicht werden.

Reise- und Hotelkosten (Zug 2. Klasse; Flug Economy Class; 2 Übernachtungen) werden nach dem Bundesreisekostengesetz (BRKG) erstattet.

Eine Veröffentlichung in erweiterter Form ist geplant.

The second edition of ConTrA – Current Contexts and Transformations of Antiquity will take place on 19 February 2027 at the Archaeological Institute of the University of Cologne.

Under the title Reconstructing Antiquity: Knowledge, Imagination and the Making of the Ancient World, the conference explores how antiquity is reconstructed, interpreted and transformed across academic, medial and public contexts. We invite contributions from archaeology, history, museum studies, media studies, game studies and related fields addressing the relationship between evidence, knowledge, imagination and creative transformation.

Possible topics include archaeological and scholarly reconstruction, museums and heritage interpretation, digital and analogue games, film, literature, comics, art, virtual reality, artificial intelligence, reenactment and other forms of contemporary engagement with antiquity.

As part of the concluding event of the project “Making Roman Inscriptions in Styria Legible Again Using Optical Measurement Techniques” (PN 4067), we invite submissions for a poster session on epigraphic research, with particular emphasis on approaches connected to the themes of our project.

We particularly welcome submissions from early-career and young scholars, including advanced students, doctoral candidates, and postdoctoral researchers. Posters may present inscriptions from any geographical or chronological context. We encourage contributions addressing topics such as the documentation, reading, reconstruction, visualisation, or interpretation of damaged, weathered, or difficult-to-read inscriptions, as well as the application of digital, imaging, or optical methods in epigraphic research.

The event will take place at the University of Graz on 20 November 2026 and will bring together scholars working at the intersection of epigraphy, ancient history, and innovative methods for the study of inscribed monuments. Applicants are invited to submit a short abstract of approximately 200–300 words.
