Follow-up to the conference “Orality, Aurality and Literacy in ‘Late Late Antiquity’ (450–700 CE)” 
(Innsbruck University, October 2025)

This second conference moves backward in time to examine the period 250–450 CE – an era of profound upheaval, experimental creativity, and foundational change. Often overshadowed by the “golden” Augustan-age model of classical literacy (revitalized in the Adrian Classicism, for example, and by poetae novelli or the rest of the erudition in 2nd century), this period witnessed the slow but irreversible disintegration of the traditional Roman political and military order, alongside the explosive rise of Christian literature and new poetic and rhetorical forms. It was a time when oral traditions, aural practices, and textual production did not merely survive but actively generated the cultural conditions for the world that followed.
We invite contributions that explore how oral, aural, and literate practices intersected, clashed, or reinforced each other in Early Late Antiquity (250–450 CE).

Submission Guidelines

  • Abstracts of 250–300 words (excluding bibliography) should be sent 
    to oraulituibkconference@gmail.com by 01/09/2026.
  • Please include a brief biographical note (max. 100 words) with institutional affiliation (if 
    applicable).
  • Presentations should be 20 minutes, followed by 10 minutes of discussion.
  • The conference will be held in person (hybrid/online possible upon request) on 10–12 
    February 2027 at the Institut für klassische Philologie und neulateinische Studien, University 
    of Innsbruck (Ágnes Heller Haus, Innrain 52a).

Publication Plans 
Selected papers will be considered for publication in an edited volume or special journal issue, 
complementing the proceedings of the first conference.

Die Tagung lädt dazu ein, bemalte Keramik aus dem vorrömischen Mittelmeerraum als Medium archäologischer Erkenntnis-Skalierung in den Mittelpunkt zu stellen. Willkommen sind Beiträge, die anhand konkreter Fallstudien unterschiedliche Maßstabsebenen miteinander verbinden, methodische und theoretische Reflexionen zu induktiven/deduktiven Prozessen präsentieren oder die epistemischen Chancen und Grenzen keramischer Evidenz diskutieren.

Wir freuen uns über Einreichungen (mit Vortragstitel und einem Abstract von bis zu 500 Zeichen) bis 15. Oktober 2026 an cva.austria@gmail.com.

Studying the Provenance of Written Artefacts: Methods, Ethics, and Law

In order to establish and advance the study of the provenance of written artefacts as a field of research, the conference will focus on the methodologies, tools and implications involved in tracing the history of such artefacts, that is any artificial or natural object with visual signs applied by humans.

To encourage deeper engagement, case study sessions will enable participants to explore these issues hands-on. Each session will conclude with a round-table discussion that shifts towards a more theoretical perspective, featuring contributions from museum professionals and provenance specialists.

Practicalities:
We invite proposals for 20-min presentations, including a title, an abstract of 400 words (half a page) and a short CV (1 page) before 31 July 2026 to conference.csmc@uni-hamburg.de. Proposals must be submitted in English. Abstracts will be reviewed by the organisers and the Scientific Committee. There will be no conference fees. Costs for travel and accommodation will be covered for accepted speakers.

Imperial Transformations - Comparative Strategies in Empires of Salvation Religions
Hamburg, 11-14 November 2026

Over the past six years, the RomanIslam Center fostered scholarly exchanges and debates on how the Roman and Islamic empires and civilizations transformed and governed the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa, as a ‘sand box’ to compare both empires. Our final conference will synthesize our findings and take our questions a step further to examine the ‘family’ of empires of salvation religions: the Roman, Islamic, and Spanish empires.

The conference will explore these questions by surveys and case studies in each of the three empires, and pursue a comparative view in the discussion after each lecture. Finally, how does comparing of these three western paradigms help us to understand the new imperial strivings?

The workshop is intended to foster cross-disciplinary debates. Apart from more conceptual papers, we encourage contributions to provide case studies that specifically respond to the conference’s themes.
Presentations at the conference should summarize the speaker’s major points without exceeding 25 minutes, followed by 20 minutes of discussion. Abstracts should be 500-700 words in length. Please send them with a short biography to katharina.mewes@uni-hamburg.de before June 30, 2026. Draft papers will be pre-circulated and have to be handed in by Oct. 15, 2026. The results of this workshop are planned to be published with de Gruyter. Travel (economy class) and accommodation will be covered.
All prospective speakers will be notified of the outcome of their proposals by mid of July 2026.

To the english version

Die Konferenz im Rahmen von „IPHIS – Gender Studies in den Altertumswissenschaften“ möchte die Frage, wie Kindheit(en) in der Antike wahrgenommen und medial vermittelt wurden, im Licht aktueller Fragestellungen neu untersuchen. Der Fokus wird dabei insbesondere auf der Bedeutung von Statusungleichheiten, den Konstruktionen von biologischem und sozialem Geschlecht und deren vielfältigen Wechselwirkungen liegen. In drei breiten thematischen Sektionen sollen jeweils unterschiedliche Zeugnisse (literarische und dokumentarische Textgattungen, bildende Kunst, ggf. bioarchäologische Befunde) aus den Perspektiven von Klassischer Philologie, Alter Geschichte, Archäologie und weiteren Kulturwissenschaften des antiken Mittelmeerraums in einen interdisziplinären Dialog gebracht werden.

Zusätzlich zu den aufgrund ihrer Expertise eingeladenen Gästen möchten wir auch bis zu vier Nachwuchswissenschaftler*innen (Doktorand*innen in fortgeschrittenem Stadium der Promotion sowie Wissenschaftler*innen in der frühen Postdoc-Phase, bis ca. zwei Jahre nach der Promotion) die Möglichkeit geben, ihre Forschung zu antiken Kindheiten in einer kooperativen Atmosphäre zu präsentieren. Aus der Tagung wird ein Sammelband in der IPHIS-Reihe des Wissenschaftlichen Verlags Trier hervorgehen (https://www.wvttrier.de/c/fachgebiete/altertumswissenschaft/iphis-gender-studies-in-den-altertumswissenschaften). Abstracts von max. 400 Wörtern können bis zum 10. Juli 2026 an debrasi@uni-trier.de und ambuehl@uni-mainz.de gesendet werden. Die Vortragenden sind herzlich eingeladen, in der Sprache ihrer Wahl vorzutragen; die gemeinsamen Kommunikationssprachen werden Deutsch und Englisch sein. Eine (teilweise) Übernahme der Reise- und Übernachtungskosten ist vorgesehen.

From the East and Back: manuscript tradition, translation and  reception of Historia trium regum by John of Hildesheim

On the bicentenary of the translation of the Three Wise Kings’ relics from Milan to Cologne in 1164, the Carmelite friar John of Hildesheim composed a work known today as Historia trium regum. The text assembles and reworks narratives concerning the prophecy of the Saviour’s birth and the Star of Bethlehem, the Nativity and the Adoration of the Magi, as well as descriptions of Oriental lands. It survives in more than a hundred Latin manuscripts across Europe and in six incunabula editions. From the fifteenth century onwards, the treatise was translated into a range of vernacular languages. Extant translations are known in English, Flemish, Dutch, French, German, Czech, Polish, and Ruthenian.

Thanks to the support of the Cluster of Excellence "EurAsian Transformations", the conference has no fee; accommodations, travel costs and lunches are also covered for the participants. A peer-reviewed edition of the conference material is planned for 2028. We understand that travel may be complicated for any number of reasons, and while we encourage in-person attendance and community, a virtual presentation and attendance option will be available via Zoom.

Please submit proposals, consisting of a 200-300 word abstract and a short bio, to Aliaksandra.Valodzina@oeaw.ac.at by 1 August 2026. Please also indicate whether you are considering in-person or virtual attendance, if accepted. Notification of acceptance will be sent by 1 September 2026.

Die DGUF beteiligt sich an der Jahrestagung des West- und Süddeutschen Verbandes für Altertumsforschung (Bonn, 21.-25. Sept.) mit einer halbtägigen Session (Di., 22 .9., nachmittags). Der DGUF-Arbeitskreis "Studentische Belange" (mehr) wird dort die Ergebnisse seiner derzeit noch laufenden Umfrage zu Praktika im Archäologiestudium vorstellen und damit als Einstieg ins Thema einen Überblick über studentische Erfahrungen geben. Unser CfP richtet sich an Studierende, die den allgemeinen Überblick durch fokussierte Erfahrungen oder Statements ergänzen wollen, sowie an Lehrende, an Praktika-Geber und Arbeitgeber, die aus ihrer Perspektive das Thema beleuchten wollen. Ziel ist es, gemeinsam eine Zwischenbilanz zu ziehen und Perspektiven zu entwickeln, um den Ist-Zustand weiter zu verbessern.

Der Studienkurs umfasst zwei Tage. Am ersten Tag werden in den Räumlichkeiten des DAI Rom die besonderen Aspekte von Architekturzeichnungen der Frühen Neuzeit und ihr kulturhistorischer Kontext eingehend diskutiert und mit Hilfe von Kurzpräsentationen weiter vertieft. Am zweiten Tag werden im Istituto Centrale per la Grafica ausgewählte Zeichnungen näher betrachtet und gemeinsam analysiert.

Der Kurs richtet sich vor allem an Nachwuchswissenschaftler*Innen in der Promotions- oder Postdoc-Phase sowie in fortgeschrittenen Masterstudiengängen der Archäologie, der Kunstgeschichte, der Bauforschung und der Geschichtswissenschaften. Erwartet wird die Bereitschaft zur Übernahme eines Kurzreferates, gerne aus dem Kontext der eigenen Forschungen zum Thema.

Die jDOG wurde 2024 als Gemeinschaft von Studierenden der Altorientalistik (Assyriologie), der Vorderasiatischen Archäologie sowie verwandter Disziplinen gegründet. Als Nachwuchsnetzwerk der Deutschen Orient-Gesellschaft e. V. setzt sie sich dafür ein, Vernetzung, fachlichen Austausch und gegenseitige Unterstützung bereits in frühen Phasen der akademischen Ausbildung zu fördern. Nach der großen Resonanz auf die erste und zweite jDOG-Konferenz in Marburg (Lahn) und München wird das erfolgreiche Format nun mit der dritten jDOG-Konferenz in Leipzig fortgeführt. Die Konferenz bietet Studierenden und Promovierenden einen geschützten, kollegialen und zugleich wissenschaftlich anregenden Rahmen, um eigene Forschungsprojekte in Form von Vorträgen, Kurzpräsentationen oder Postern zur Diskussion zu stellen. Ziel ist es, auf dieser Grundlage miteinander ins Gespräch zu kommen, Rückmeldungen zu erhalten, neue Perspektiven zu entwickeln und fachliche Kontakte zu knüpfen.

Beitragsvorschläge sind per E-Mail an jdog.konferenz@orient-gesellschaft.de zu senden. Einzureichen sind: Name, Universität, Studienabschnitt (Bachelor, Master, PhD), gewünschtes Beitragsformat (Vortrag, Blitzvortrag oder Poster) sowie ein Abstract von maximal 300 Wörtern. Das Abstract sollte prägnant darlegen, welches Thema behandelt wird, welche Fragestellung im Mittelpunkt steht und welches Ziel der Beitrag verfolgt. Bei Rückfragen, Anregungen oder Unsicherheiten hinsichtlich der Eignung einer Beitragsidee steht das Organisationsteam gerne als vertrauliche und unterstützende Anlaufstelle zur Verfügung.
Der Einsendeschluss für die Abstracts ist der 31. Juli 2026.

Interdisciplinary conference

The conference, hosted by the institute of Jewish Studies, is conceived as a forum for genuine interdisciplinary exchange within the broader field of ancient studies. We invite contributions from Archaeology, Ancient History, Classical Philology (Greek and Latin studies), Jewish Studies, Biblical Studies, and related disciplines. All contributions share a focus on emotions, affects, or emotional concepts in ancient cultures - from the Hebrew Bible to the Graeco-Roman world.

A particular concern of the conference is to bring together early-career researchers and established scholars in substantive dialogue: doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers are explicitly encouraged to apply alongside senior academics. The conference will be structured into thematic sections organised according to research field and period.
